Tehran’s Niavaran Cultural Center will be hosting a festival on Thursday exclusively for young maqami musicians under the age of 28. Director of the center Khosro Zeinalpur said that the festival is organized to introduce young maqami musicians and to help study the current status and future of maqami music in the country.

Seventeen groups of young musicians will be giving their performances over a period of three days. The participating groups are representing Gilan, Kermanshah, Ilam, Lorestan, Mazandaran, Kurdestan, and several other provinces. In Islamic music, a maqam is a specific musical scale combined with characteristic melodic elements or motifs, played following traditional formats, which together forms a complete system for the melodic and tonal structure of a musical performance.
