This year’s edition of the Fajr International Music Festival is adding three subsidiary awards to its previous list of prizes. The competition section of the festival will consist of traditional, classic, regional, pop, orchestral and choral music.

Bijan Taraqqi Award (named after the late songwriter) will be granted to the best songwriter, and Qeisar Aminpur Award will be given to the best work of poetry. Songwriter Bijan Taraqqi died in April 2009 at the age of 80. Contemporary poet Qeisar Aminpur died of heart failure in 2007 at the age of 48.

The Shahnameh Ferdowsi Award is also arranged for the best music composed on Shahnameh. Iran’s proposal for registration of the Shahnameh millennium programs on the UNESCO calendar of events in 2010 will be discussed at the 35th UNESCO General Conference that will be held in Paris in October 2009.
Musicians and musical groups are asked to submit their works to the secretariat of the festival before November 21. The secretariat at the Music Office is located on Shahriar St.and Hafez Ave.
The week-long festival will open on February 26 after the months of Muharram and Safar. The annual festival is usually held in January, but since January 2010 coincides with the mourning month of Muharram, the gala will be brought forward.
