The 16th edition of the Isfahan International Theater Festival for Children and Young Adults was inaugurated Saturday at the Nur Garden of Isfahan.

The program opened with a message of the culture minister and with the participation of the secretary of the festival, children’s writer Mostafa Rahmandust. The massage was read by the director of the Isfahan department of Culture and Islamic Guidance. “Theater is regrettably understood as an aristocratic art in our culture despite that numerous religious concepts are an integral part of the art of theater in Iran,

such as the widely-known Tazieh passion play. “The great epic of Ashura is engraved in minds through Tazieh. Theater also has great influence on the audience, but there has been less effort put into to introducing this art form to people, reads part of the message. Rahmandust also expressed his satisfaction at having taken the lead role in the festival, and hopes to see its development each successive year. The event has been able to attract many spectators of far-flung cities and towns across the country and around the world, and will find its rightful position in the world some day, he remarked. He also added that additional efforts are needed to encourage authors to write more material for children’s and young adults’ theater and to present a more favorable image of theater to them.
